There was an early Christmas present for local pooches with a new dog off-leash area (DOLA) at Yamanto. The highly-anticipated Sarah Drive Park project was funded in the 2017-2018 Ipswich City Council budget and construction completed this week.
Division 10 Councillor David Pahlke said there had been a strong demand from residents for a DOLA. “While there are 14 off-leash dog parks around Ipswich, there was a service level gap in this area, with Wulkuraka and Raceview being the closest,” he said.
Cr Pahlke said the Yamanto DOLA provided a facility for dog owners while maintaining proper distances from homes and the playground.
“It’s the balance of something convenient and close that doesn’t conflict with the other park users and neighbours,” he said. “The design allows separation between small and large dogs, which is an attractive feature for pet owners. “The construction team were very efficient and it’s a fantastic result for residents and their four-legged friends.” The Yamanto DOLA will also be the first to trial code of conduct signs that use positive ways to convey key messages. Health, Security and Community Safety Committee Chairperson Cr Sheila Ireland said DOLAs are designed to promote socialisation and exercise activities for dogs and their owners.
“It is not the intent of Council’s Animal Management or Community Compliance areas to heavily regulate such areas, but rather, to promote a community standard which can be supported by education campaigns.”
