WHERE IS THIS WATER COMING FROM?
Water running from under a fence line, onto Karrabin Rosewood Road and under the road into a paddock on the opposite side of the road has locals puzzled.
Ipswich City Councillor Dave Pahlke said they have been investigating the source of the water for some time. “The water has been tested and initially we thought it may have been leaking from the town supply but with no chlorine showing in the results we now know it has to be some sort of natural spring,” he said. “We also wondered if maybe it was coming from old mine workings in the area but to be honest we are a bit stumped at this time.”
Shirley Boughen who has lived in the area all her life said she remembers water there when she was a schoolgirl in the early 1940s. “Several times a year we’d see water there as kids but never as much as there is now and not there all the time like it is these days,” she said. Shirley said her thoughts run along the lines of possible seepage from Rocky Glen on the other side of the hill. The current owner of the property said the water has definitely got worse over the past three years, admitting the driveway has been undermined and trees lost. She added that the front paddock is now ‘boggy’ all the time and vehicles quickly get bogged on the wet ground. Stock has drunk the water for many years with no ill effects although it is slightly brackish.
Cr Pahlke is calling on the community for any information on the water flow in past years. I’d be keen to hear from some or our older residents about their memories of the water in this area,” he said. “Ideally what we would like to do is localise the source and then rather than have it running under the road and undermining, pipe it under the road and into a dam where stock can use it. “We need to get to the bottom of this and make sure that it is not damaging the road and local area”
