Harrisville Bowls Club President Arthur Simpson with Rosewood
counterpart Terry Hobden will be leading their clubs completion for
revamped Cr David Pahlke Cunningham Shield 2015.
FRIENDLY rivalry between the two bowls clubs in Cr David Pahlke’s Division 10 back in 1996. Led to a competition that has outlived council boundaries. In 1996, both the Harrisville and Rosewood clubs were within the boundaries in 2008, Harrisville became part of the Scenic Rim region. But the competition, friendly rivalry and bonds between the two clubs was not going to be severed by a mere council boundary. The Cunningham Shield matches, sponsored by Cr Pahlke, are held once over a year and hotly contested. “The first match between the clubs was held in 1996 and Harrisville walked away the victors with the Cunningham Shield,” Cr Pahlke recalled “Since then Harrisville has had eight wins while Rosewood lays claim to 11.” But the shield was becoming too small to hold the yearly winner’s emblems so Cr Pahlke organised a refurbishment.
“I’ve added a framed area that allows for many years of winners to be recorded and also an information block at the base with information on Alan Cunningham, the botanist and explorer. “i also added a couple of small emblems, one showing a male bowler and the other a female. “I’m proud to be the sponsor of this competition that recognises two clubs whose members I have a great deal of respect for.”
