EVER-popular performer and perennial Playschool favourite Jay Laga’aia had everyone singing and clapping along to his performance at Ipswich Library. Jay played the harmonica, the guitar and the ukulele and sang and danced along with his young audience.  Library gets loud when TV favourite stops by Children’s entertainer Jay Laga’aia drops in for singing and dancing By Anna Hartley


DANCING, singing and clapping attracted plenty of eager little fans to the Ipswich Central Library where actor and children’s entertainer Jay Laga’aia preformed on Tuesday. Jay, who is well known for hosting Play School, played the harmonica, the guitar and the ukulele while he sang and danced along with his young audience during the half-hour performance. “Tomorrow im doing an early learning forum and I thought if I am coming up to the area of Ipswich why don’t I come and visit the library why don’t I come and visit the library and have a play around,” he said. “ I love doing these shows, it’s great to know a little bit more about the community.” Although Jay starred in films, television series and stage productions including Nim’s Island, Star Wars, Home and Away, Wicked and The Lion King. He said he still had a passion for entertaining children. “This is what I enjoy most because kids don’t lie to you, if you don’t entertain them they walk away,”. He said Jay said he tries to encourage parents not just to read to their children but to engage with books. “Reading to our kids something im really passionate about,” he said “you can’t read to your kids if you’re on your phone, making an appointment or watching TV.”


Rosewood Councillor David Pahlke attended the event and said he always read to his children when they were younger. “Jay knows the importance of early learning and reading to kids,” Cr Pahlke said.


“I think it’s marvellous, we’re so pleased and proud he wanted to come here today.  “He’s getting kids involved but also getting mums and dads involved and that’s really important.”  Mother Teneke Wadmaier from Leichardt said she and her daughter were in the library and didn’t know the show was going to be on. “it was really enjoyable,”she said.  “My daughter loved it, she was bouncing around like crazy.” Jay has three children’s albums and is currently in production on his own children’s television show Jay’s Jungle, Which is set to air in January next year.




• Jay is a well-known New Zealand born actor and children’s entertainer, and a much loved presenter on Play School.


• Jay is a gifted musician who has written and recorded 3 children’s albums with ABC for Kids and toured his live show throughout Australia.


•He is currently in production on his own children’s television show, Jay’s Jungle.


•Jay is a proud father of 8.
