PATRONS will be greeted by a new look Rosewood Aquatic Centre when the Anzac Park centre opens for the summer season in late September.
Ipswich City Council Division 10 Councillor David Pahlke said council had recently undertaken a $65,000 upgrade project at the 48-year-old centre to freshen up its facilities for the community.  “We scheduled this work during the off season of the pool to ensure it did not disrupt the community,” Cr Pahlke said.  “It also allowed the learn to swim program to be offered for the full season leading up to the upgrade. “  Cr Pahlke said the project had involved the removal of the former existing all weather enclosure over the learn to swim pool and its replacement with a new all-weather enclosure.  “Contractor Capicon carried out the construction project to the existing all weather structure which was at the end of its effective life. “As the learn to swim pool performs a specific function, council found it necessary to refurbish the all-weather enclosure so that this service to the community could continue.

“Babies and toddlers with their parents/carers are the main user group and the pool is designed to help them become familiar with and confident in a pool/water environment and the Rosewood Pool offers programs specific to this.  “Being enclosed also allows the learn to swim pool to maintain a more constant temperature which is advantageous for hydrotherapy activities and for when the days are starting to get cooler for swimming in the main pool. “It offers more shade and shelter from wind and the rain.  “A number of the side panels of the enclosure feature zip track blinds allowing panels to be opened or closed to suit the requirements for the pool and its user groups.”
Cr Pahlke said as well as upgrading the learn to swim pool council had also installed new signage at the Rosewood centre. “The signage on the main entrance wall depicts a swimmer displaying the different swimming strokes.”  The Rosewood Aquatic Centre lessee is former Australian middle-long distance freestyle swimming champion Justin Lemberg.  Coached by the flamboyant Laurie Lawrence, Mr Lemberg won a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle event at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.  He was also part of the fourth placed Australian 4x200m freestyle relay team at these games.
