THE Rosewood Little Athletics Club is starting 2014 on the right note thanks to recent support from Ipswich City Council.

Division 10 Councillor David Pahlke said council had funded the construction of a shed at Rosewood State High School for the club to replace the shipping containers they had previously been using.  “The new shed will serve as formal storage for the Little Athletics for their sporting equipment. “This club which has been in operation since 1987 has about 60 members ranging in age from three to 16-years-old.  “It is great to see these young people participating in a wonderful activity like Little Athletics so council is pleased to be able to support the local club in this way.  “This is one small way in which we can ensure that the club and its members are able to function properly.  “This support is vital as among the club’s members could well be some of Australia’s new athletic talent and champions.”

Cr Pahlke said in addition to constructing the storage shed, council had also joined forces with Education Queensland to provide new fencing in the area.  “We have fenced off the Rosewood Town Drain to make this area safe for the community.  “The flooding and erosion issues stemming from the events of November 2008 and January 2011 highlighted the necessity of council taking ownership of the entire length of this drainage easement which is known as Masons Gully or the town drain.”  Cr Pahlke said the shed and fencing had been installed by council at a cost of $63,000 with funding coming from Education Queensland for the installation of the new perimeter fence.

“The project also included raising the height of the shed about 300mm above the natural ground to provide a better flood immunity in the future.”  The Rosewood Little Athletics Club meets from 7.45am to about 10am every Saturday between September and March.  Each child competes in five events each week including shot put, discus, javelin, high jump, long jump, triple jump, sprints, middle distance, long distance, hurdles, racewalking and relays.
