SPINAL INJURIES Assoc Annual Awards

Judy and Laurie Baker with Mayor Paul Pisasale and Councillors David Pahlke and Charlie Pisasale

Walloon resident  Judy Baker received an award for the  “2012 Inclusive Community Champion” for the Best Individual. The awards are given out to Individuals that provide activities that enable disadvantaged and physically disabled members of the community to participate. Using  Judys  words: “My contribution was towards building an inclusive community and was based on  the provision of art classes and tuition at the Leichhardt Community Centre. Art is the perfect therapy for anyone suffering depression and provides social involvement with others. Two decades of volunteering in the arts has given me the opportunity to open access for new and older  residents of the City, to a social outlet while organizing annual fundraising events that attract a plethora of visitors. Having written the book “The Babies of Walloon” detailing the historical connections Walloon has with Henry Lawson,  has led me to be involved with the Ipswich Poetry Feast.”

Ipswich City Council also received awards for the 2012 Inclusive Community Champion for the following categories:

Best Sporting Facility:    North Ipswich Reserve

Best Recreation, Leisure or Entertainment Venue:   Queens Park

Best Community Service Provider:  The Humanities Centre

Best Government Department for its Healthy Lifestyle Program and Social Justice Policy
