YOUNG book lovers were out in force across Ipswich today for National Simultaneous Story time.
The special day involved the reading of the featured book The Very Cranky Bear by three local councillors – Cr David Pahlke, Cr Heather Morrow and Cr Victor Attwood. Local reading enthusiasts joined in the nation-wide reading effort through the Ipswich Library and Information Service.  Ipswich’s libraries joined organisations from Broome to Hobart at 11am today to read The Very Cranky Bear to more than 170,000 children across Australia.
Now in its twelfth successful year, National Simultaneous Story time 2012 aims to celebrate and acknowledge the vital work being done in libraries, schools and communities around Australia to develop young people’s literacy and numeracy skills.  The Very Cranky Bear is written by Nick Bland and published by Scholastic Australia.  Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said the Ipswich Library and Information Service were pleased to be part of this national event which aimed to promote the value of reading and literacy and the value of books.  “This nation-wide reading effort takes on a special significance during 2012 which is actually the National Year of Reading,” Cr Pahlke said.“Throughout the year, Ipswich libraries are doing everything they can to promote reading and its wonderful benefits for all ages.  “Our libraries regularly hold story time sessions which are very popular with our patrons as they show children how much fun reading can be and assist in the development of early literacy skills.  “Each month there is a new theme.”
Story time is regularly hosted by the Ipswich Library and Information Services between 10.30am and 11.15am at the following times:
•  Ipswich Library – 1st Wednesday of the month;
•  Redbank Plaza Library – 2nd Wednesday of the month;
•  Redbank Plains Library – 3rd Wednesday of the month and;
•  Ipswich Library – 4th Thursday of the month.
Special storytelling sessions are available for playgroups and other groups upon request.
